Movie analysis: The Truman Show and our perception of reality

changes mental habits. The media is a message; it creates different truths. It is said that heavy television viewers; that is those who watch more than four hours of television per day, get most of there information from the television media. That is in contrast to light television viewers; who watch less than one hour per day. These viewers gather information from both televisions and from alternate information sources. Both types of people are influenced differently. Heavy television viewers are more paranoid of wrong doing. This might be the reason for some of the video cameras that surround us today.

Television influences people on a variety of different levels. While watching a television show regarding other criminal acts, one might become scared. It is easy to look at one vision of a certain type of person and reflect that back on all people with the same traits. Therefore heavy television viewers have a better chance of placing blame and or wanting cameras to be positioned in a vast array of areas. On the other hand, light television viewers may be less likely to push judgment on someone just because of assumptions. This may lead to less cameras and a lighter invasion of privacy. Getting information from different sources insures a better knowledge of everyday life.

The Truman Show does a great job of effectively achieving its goals. The purpose of the movie was to make viewers aware of situations in which we are being faced with today. Truman the character begins to become aware of his surroundings. In today's society it is important for individuals to realize their actions are being recorded. Our freedoms are dwindling. The Truman Show is successful in showing the effects of this invasion. After Truman realizes his life is a television drama he feels let down by everyone and everything. It is a confusion time to say the least. Truman undergoes a sense of betrayal. He question his supposed loved ones and friends.

Truman's television wife and friends have a hard time facing him when he encounters the truth. This shows that videotaping someone's every move is wrong. It is socially invasive. Being watched twenty-four hors a day, seven days a week is insidious. No one can convince me otherwise. While reality television is popular it is not truly reality. Characters sign a detailed contract. This is untrue throughout the world today. As a citizen of the United States I have yet to sign a contract saying that I am willing to have my life electronically documented.

Although there are some particular instances when I feel a video camera is imperative, usually I feel they are ridiculous an unnecessary. Years and years have passed without this invasion of privacy. These cameras have yet to stop crime and theft. Criminals are aware they are being watched. They have come up with ways to get around these cameras. People are not safer altogether having these cameras in place. Instead there every move is being recorded, and their rights are being violated.

The Truman Show, and EdTV brings peoples violation of privacy to their immediate attention. It is something that people should be aware of. Knowing that a camera is always on the ON position makes a person do things differently. This is a problem within today's society. At the rate that video cameras are being produced and installed, soon every person will have a camera on them at all times. From my perspective this is ludicrous. No one should have their every move documented. People are inclined to have more freedom than that. Society should put a stop to this. Everyone is being violated.
