Movie analysis: The Truman Show and our perception of reality

Truman Show is a film in which Jim Carrey is the main character. Jim's character is named Truman. The movie stars while Truman is living a simple life as an insurance adjuster. Truman has a wife, an incredible best friend, and a decent job. Everyone happily lives on an island called Seahaven. It is Truman's belief that life is moving along smoothly. This is a problem because, Truman has been living a lie. He was placed in a television show unknowingly. Everything Truman does is broadcasted to the entire world. His family members, friends, and co-workers are all acting, while Truman is living a false life.

Truman never tires to leave Seahaven because it is his belief that his father drowned in the surrounding seas. The makers of the Truman Show led him to this belief. Everything that Truman is experiencing and or has experienced is false. Writers have scripted his life to their liking. Truman does not know the real truth but, suddenly one day Truman's begins to become suspicious. He realizes that something is wrong in his life, and that something is larger than he ever could have expected.

Truman begins to notice symbols that seem peculiar. These symbols include; any mark, sign, or gesture that communicates meaning based upon social agreement (Daughton, Hart). He notices that a man rides his bike across the street everyday at the same time. Every person that Jim encounters treats him kindly. There are never any problems inside his community. Each and every day is beautiful. All things seem to stay in the correct order. Everything is in its place. Truman doesn't realize the falsity of his situation. Symbols began to appear everywhere.

Truman is living inside a created environment. He is unaware of the fact until a lamp appears to have fallen from the sky. Finally, Truman begins to notice some of the oddities that surround him. One instance includes a character changing wardrobes inside of a bank. This is when Truman realizes his environment is a backdrop. The backdrop includes actors, actresses, lighting, scripts, and deceptiveness. The created environment was unrecognizable to Truman for such a long period of time. Truman got used to living in a structured atmosphere. Since Truman began his life in Seahaven the unreality of it all did not hit him.

In contrast to the Truman Show, another moving that came out in 1990 entitled EdTV brings about a different view of video cameras. In this instance Ed a video store clerk, has agreed to have his life on tape. Ed signs
