Understanding generations

by Kendall Blair

Created on: July 05, 2008

All generations have their own understanding of the world in which they live. It is important to decipher one's age when considering their general approach. That said, genteration that is known as the "Nexters" seems to get overlooked. This is the generation whom grew up in the eighties who are just now entering the work force. This generation has a hard time being understood.

Generation "Nexters" have total trust in the elder generations that came before them. Nexters have grown up with the Internet and the Nintendo. Their lives are full of digital items. This is untrue of generations before them. Having said this those who were not exposed to such digital items at such young ages are at a bit of a disadvantage. The Nexters have this to their benefit. This causes some dilemma while in the work place.

Nexters as a generation are larger than Generation X. There population total will approximately weigh in at about 72.9 million as suggested by this book. The kids of the Nexter Generation were primarily "planned". This cannot be said from all the generations before them.

Generation Nexters have different values, hero's, events, trends, and memorabilia. Some of the things that define the generation as defined by are; Barney, The Spice Girls, Pogs, the Oklahoma City Bombing, Stress, Sociability, Diversity, Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods.

Other generations have a lot to say about the Nexters both positive and negative. The Veterans and the Boomers are impressed with their abilities to navigate digital
devices, while the Gen Xers suggest that they are "another self-absorbed generation of spoiled brats."

Nexters on the job are described as; optimistic, having tenacity and a heroic spirit, great ability to multitask, as well as being technologically savvy. Their liabilities include they; "need supervision and structure, and there are inexperienced in handling difficult people issues".

All generations have their strengths and weaknesses. People have assumptions about the Nexters that will sometimes ring true but not always. It is important to remember "you can't judge a book by it's cover."

When I asked a member of Nexter Generation what was significant to them and they're generation they quickly decided on September 11th. September 11th was a day that he said was so humbling to him. All of his selfish feelings were put behind him after witnessing such a horrifying tragedy. He admitted that nothing had ever hit him so hard. Watching people jump out of windows on live television was a sight that he will never forget. September 11th is a day that embedded in history. The Nexter Generation will forever be haunted from those memories.
