INSPIRATION

ACT 1, SCENE 1 Nathan's Living room
NATHAN sits staring at a blank piece of paper in front of him. He holds a pen in his hand, waiting for inspiration to strike him. The shudders are closed. The room is dark and sparse. There is no furniture but the piano and bench. Two photographs sit on the piano. One is of Shannon the other is of Nathan's mother. Nathan leans forward and draws a musical staff across the page. He glances up at a photographs.

SCENE 2
The doorbell rings. Nathan walks over to the DOOR and opens it. Julia stands outside.

NATHAN
Hi. You must be Julia. Look, I'm sorry but this whole fix up thing isn't-

Julia looks as though she is about to cry at the impending rejection and Nathan gives in.

NATHAN
You know what, would you like to sit down?

Nathan shows Julia to the couch. She sits down at one end. He sits at the other. The silence is deafening.

JULIA
Should we go for a walk?

NATHAN
It's pouring rain outside.

JULIA
OhI mean, if you-

Seeing that she is nervous already, Nathan gives in again.

NATHAN
You know, a walk sounds nice. And in the rain it is sure to be an...invigorating experience.

They get up. Nathan puts on a coat and they walk out the door.

SCENE 3 Street outside Nathan's house
Nathan and Julia walk up the street. They pass no one in the heavy rain. The silence between them continues until they see a homeless man lying cold and alone on the ground. Nathan walks ahead of Julia, removes his coat and covers the lonely man. He promptly begins to shiver. Julia catches up to Nathan and, seeing what he has done, she begins to trust him. She puts her arms around him to keep him warm.

JULIA
(Nervously, as though expecting immediate rejection.) Have you eaten?

NATHAN
No.

They stare into each other's eyes for a moment before continuing to walk presumably to a restaurant.

ACT 2, SCENE 2 Piano Room
Nathan sits at the piano, again trying to write music. He plays some notes on the piano, writes them down and then quickly crosses them out. He picks up Shannon's photo and stares at it for a moment before flinging it across the room. The glass shatters as it the frame hits the wall. After a moment, Nathan gets up and picks up the pieces. He places them in his piano bench. After glancing for a moment at Shannon's photograph, he closes the lid. He sits down again and begins to cry as the scene fades.

SCENE 3 Music Room
Nathan is at the piano playing Julia a song in which he mentions Shannon. Julia sits in one of two chairs that have been added to the room. He finishes the song.

JULIA
