Why is this even a discussion? I am under the assumption that the United States of America is still a free country. What I drive and how I drive it is my business and my business alone. If people want to spend the money THEY earned at their job on an SUV then by all means let them do it. Who are we to say it is wrong or that there should be a restriction?
I realize gas prices are high, but so are other things. We can not have the government stepping in every time things get tight or bad for us in economic terms. I am a huge fan of individual responsibility and as adults we must be trusted to make decisions on our own. Does the government have a say in this at all? I do not think they do in any capacity. Why? Because we are talking about a vehicle for goodness sake. There are much more important things going on in this world than how much gas my car is burning, in my opinion.
The term SUV is used as a bad word now days because of oil and gas prices. But, there are SUV's out there that get better gas mileage than the car I currently drive. Why should further restrictions be placed on that? The government has already gone far enough. What about those sports cars that get 10-15 miles per gallon? Are we going to put restrictions on them as well? Are pick-up trucks going to be tagged as too much of a gas guzzler? Where does it stop? Are we going to set up a new branch of government to monitor how much my car gets per gallon on the highway? Is there going to be a checkpoint on the interstate, much like a weigh station for semi's, where we have to pull over to check our gas tank?
My point in all this is we are jumping off the cliff right now because of gas prices. I understand and realize things are tight, $4 a gallon is outrageous and I do not enjoy paying that for something as necessary as gasoline. However, we should not let this cause a knee-jerk reaction and force us into some unnecessary government oversight. I believe the market will correct itself over time and we should allow it to do so without much interference. Let's calm down and let supply and demand handle the SUV situation. If people do not want them, then they will not sell. If current owners can not afford to put gas in them, they will stop driving them and look for other means of transportation. This is how a free market works and I love it! We need to stop looking for the government to hold our hand and trust other adults to make decisions for themselves.
