Do sacred texts have to be written? No, not written by the hand of man with pen on paper, or with stylus on clay, or with ochre on rock. Sacred texts can be and have been written by the hand of God and are waiting to be read - and in fact are being read today.
A sacred text is a tangible record of a message from God, either directly scribed or imparted to a messenger, someone inspired to record what he (or she) saw and heard that seems to be truly from God.
Written texts that seem to be messages from God appear in most earthly cultures. The Holy Bible, the Torah, the Koran, the Book of Mormon, the Veda, the Popul Vuh...these are but a few of the hundreds of sacred writings accepted by one or more cultures to be the Word of God.
But what about those that are not written, in the sense that they were not written down by man but laid out by the hand of God? Consider these few, then add to the list yourself:
DNA. Human DNA contains a history of our heritage from the creation of life to our daily individual existences. It contains within it important information concerning our personal histories, such as where our ancestors wandered and lived, what they ate, and what their strengths and weaknesses were. In the DNA is also revealed the workings of the Creator: how adaptation and change are brought about, how from a simple 4-letter alphabet he wrote and continues to write the entire Book of Life. As such it glorifies God and gives us an understanding of our individuality, our strengths, and the gifts we have to work with as any scripture should.
The Earth. The structure of the Earth is a revelation of history and creation. God unfolds the scope of his earthly work in the strata of rocks, uncovered by the erosion of rivers. He encourages us to observe the ebbs and tides of glaciers and the formation and dissolution of continents by allowing us to experience challenges that stimulate our curiosity as we look for answers and discover these phenomena. The evidence left in rocks parallels creation stories told in written texts, such as the sequence of events that took place during the six creative periods highlighted at the beginning of Genesis in the Old Testament: these creative periods have the precise sequence of developments as those uncovered by scientists studying the Earth. Is one more sacred than the other?
Fossils. God reveals his handiwork and lessons for living through discoveries of life in times past. Important messages are contained
