Miwa Gemini Jezebel Music Open Mic Night
Venue: Pianos
City: New York City
Date: June 11, 2008
The New York City's lower eastside rock club, Pianos was the host of Jezebel Music Open Mic Night on June 11, 2008. On bill was New York City's greatest treasure yet to be discovered by mainstream, singer/songwriter/guitarist Miwa Gemini. She is one of those ladies who come along as often as Halley's Comet streaks across the New York skyline. And like the comet itself, if you miss it, then you will miss a very rewarding experience. When Miwa sings, she shows complete mastering over the volume of her pitch and expert control over the dynamics of her chord changes. She exercises such finesse in her delivery and projects such passion that you have to wonder if her day job is performing in one of the Broadway musicals.
Miwa performed several songs from her latest release This Is How I Found You. Performing beside Miwa was multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist Aaron Burns who teetered between playing the accordion and tinkering with the xylophone keys. He was brilliant at producing colorful shades and exuberant pulses that gave Miwa's melodies depth and definition. Some songs that she played from her recent album were the reclining soft-rock tempo of "Something Ordinary," the upbeat arpeggios of "Crazy Over You," the dreamy-pop strokes of "Room Of You," and the bluesy ruminations of the acoustic guitar and vocal melody "Forever For Never." Burns' well-groomed ministrations slid into place alongside Miwa's penetrating vocals and soulful guitar playing. Their union created beautifully rolling waves and soft picturesque tapestries with gorgeous tones. Miwa and Burns' rendition of "Que Serea Serea," made famous by Doris Day in the 60s, was absolutely exquisite like the melody was specifically made for Miwa's measurements and temperament. Burn's improvisation in the xylophone solo through the bridge was delightful as Miwa's vocals lit gentle flairs along the tune. Also sharing the stage with Miwa and Aaron is Sasha, Miwa's porcelain cat that symbolizes her dearest friend who cannot be at her shows physically but can be there figuratively through Sasha.
Miwa Gemini's set for the Jezebel Music Open Mic Night show at Pianos put another notch in her tour buckle, and jump started her summer tour in support of her album This is How I Found You. She is becoming a veteran on NYC's rock club circuit with each show being just as strikingly beautiful as the last.
