Fourth of July independence celebrations across the US

people have been reenacting for many years," said DiMartino, who added that the hobby of reenacting has increased since the 1993 release of the movie "Gettysburg." The reenactments have lasted as long as they have because "Gettysburg is considered to be the turning point of the Civil War. This is what makes Gettysburg significant to Civil War history."

The day-long reenactments will be held July 4-6, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and will include living mortar fire demonstrations, living history programs and a recreation of the six major battles, including Pickett's Charge.

There are more than 450 mounted cavalry set to participate, an artillery salute with 100 cannons to take place on Saturday and Sunday on the battlefields, and a large living history village with two living history activity tents.

This year, the battle reenactments will be held on a larger scale, with more than 15,000 re-enactors from around the world who are expected to take part, according to DiMartino.

Gettysburg holds reenactments on a worldwide scale once every five years.
