Many things can cause bumps on the tongue. Bumps may be the result of reaction to certain foods or medications, or it can be something more severe.
Bumps caused by reaction to foods or medications can be dealt with rather simply. Gentle toothpastes like Tom's of Maine, or Prevadent (available by prescription from your dentist) or even mouthwash like Cepacol may help rather quickly. Sometimes the bumps will go away on their own as the offending food is eliminated from the diet.
Discoloration or bumps of a more serious variety, such as those causing extreme pain or unusual taste in the mouth should be investigated more thoroughly by a professional. Candida (aka "thrush") is a type of yeast infection causing tiny bumps on the tongue. Some people have reported success in reducing the effects of thrush by incorporating yogurt into their diet for a period of time.
