How to choose and decorate wedding arches

by bluephin

Created on: July 03, 2008

A lot of couples (especially the bride) would now choose to have an arch on their wedding list. The arch could be present where the wedding ceremonies will be held as well as the reception. Nowadays, with the price of commodities shooting up the ceiling every bride and groom should be open to the option of choosing and decorating their wedding arch by themselves and with the help of friends and families.

So where should the couples start? This set of questions, when answered by the couple, might be a good way to start on and get that arch building a go.

* What purpose do you want your arch to serve?

Aside from the plain and simple decorative purpose the arch is also a good "entrance point" for either the entourage during the ceremony or for guests during reception. It would also be good to ask yourself whether you want the ceremony arch to be transferred to the reception and be re-used there. In this case, you might want your arch to not be too heavy and the decoration not too elaborate to worry about at the time of transport.

* Where do you want to place your arch?

If a particular will serve just one purpose, where would you want to it placed?
Some of the common places that you can put the arch are:
At the entrance where the entourage would start walking from to go to the altar.
At the altar, behind the wedding officiator.
Just behind where the couple are seated during the ceremony (must be just off the back so there would be fewer concerns about making a high arch to fit the height of the groom or whoever is taller).
Behind the couple's place at the reception table.
Just behind or over the cake table (only opt for over if the cake is not too high or else you'd worry about making a high enough arch).

* What type of arch do you want?

You can choose from a range of materials to make the arch. Common choices would be iron, wood, bamboo or even two-ply hard cardboard. If you choose to have a multi-purpose arch and would require a bit of lifting for transport from ceremony to reception obviously you have to choose a lighter material such as the cardboard or wood. If you are into a more formal look, create a lattice pattern with the pieces of wood or bamboo. If your wedding is not too formal but not too informal as well, try to intertwine the pieces as if it is a bunch of tree branches that formed an arch. If you'd think medieval is your taste, create two ornate columns with an arch in between.

Remember that the arch should be placed securely so that not even the wind could
