Wedding planning: How to choose a song for your first dance

by Author Name Withheld 7

The first dance of the bride and groom is one of the only things at the wedding that make me want to say "Awwww!" very loudly (Sadly, I am not a sap for rings and kisses). The song you choose is rather important, as every time you hear it it will inevitably remind you of your special day and everything that happened on it. If you honestly have no idea where to start, or just want some new ideas, I have compiled a list of helpful hints to aid you in your quest for the right selection:

1) Is there a song that was playing at a significant moment in your relationship? For example, was "From This Moment" playing when she told you "I Love You" for the first time? Did "Come Away With Me" just happen to come on as he proposed to you? Think back and see if anything pops into your head. It may even be a tune that was on your mind on a really fun date you two went on. Note that if you met your significant other by grinding on them in a club, "Doncha Wish Your Girlfriend Was Hot Like Me" may not provide the musical styles you wish to sway to.

2) Go with a classic. Sure, lots of couples pick "The Way You Look Tonight" as their song. There's a reason for that - Frank knew exactly what he was singing about, and the simple lyrics are completely effective in conveying the love one can feel for a person. (For ideas, try typing in "classic wedding songs" into a search bar such as Google or Yahoo.)

3)Think about nicknames or cute phrases you say to each other, and see if there are any songs that incorporate those words into their lyrics. "Come What May" just happens to have "I'll love you until the end of time" in it, and thousands of songs use "Baby" before declaring their devotion.

4) Pick a fast song. Slow songs are naturally the normal choice, but if you worry about stepping on your sweetie's toes or just want to go against the norm, there are plenty of upbeat tunes to groove to. I don't care how many years go by, I will always love "What I Like About You" - the band name is even wedding-friendly: The Romantics.

5)Pick a favorite. It doesn't matter if it has nothing to do with love and other mushy things. If you and your spouse have one song that you both can not possibly ever get sick of, consider it as your first dance. This is your special night, and if you want your first dance to be "Thriller", go for it.

Above all, remember that this is YOUR wedding, and YOUR song. YOU are the ones that will hear it and remember your first dance as a married couple, so pick something you both like and will cherish forever.
