College campuses and all schools in particular should be gun-free zones. Simply stated, the wild west is over and shooting out of self defense would be a good reason to take a gun with you everywhere you go. Violence is terrible in America and always has been. The random university shootings that have gone on in this country have taken innocent lives and without so much as a reason. It's all horribly senseless.
Unfortunately, I realize the insanity of so many members of society. I can foresee shoot outs in restaurants just because some guy looked "weird" to another. Sorry, but I don't trust the American public. Or can you not imagine some trigger happy freak whipping out a gun on some unsuspecting kid waving a tree limb he found?
Anger is a real part of life. Silencing people and driving them insane is no way to handle what is going on. But neither is trusting the American public to haul guns every where. It is opening a whole new way of life which could make dealing with stress as easy as pulling a damned trigger.
Further, with law enforcement agencies, do we really need to pack guns?
Why aren't people getting all worked up over the heinous Pit Bull situation we have going in this country? Pit Bulls make me want to own and use a gun. Those vicious dogs invite thoughts of violence. They kill babies and we all say, "They're just animals". My point exactly, they are just animals and they are getting more support than children or college students. Or middle-aged women.
College campus' should be peaceful places where anyone can seek knowledge or enjoy the art. The college should employ a sane security force which knows how to work its way through those who visit the college and anticipate and foil any issues.
It seems to me that owning and packing a gun cannot ensure or gaurantee anyone's safety. Ultimately, he or she who survives shoots best. What if the nut is the best shot. Should we then all walk away like they did in the old west? What if an all out gun contest breaks out and you've got a dozen people shooting at each other? What if 2 of them are cousins to a cop?
What then? War?
A very abstract and too near war. Too near to what we want to mean civilized.
I don't like it. It's too passe. It's too easy and final and creates judges instead of good judgement and there are too many insane people walking around as though they are sane.
Knee jerk just doesn't seem to mean what it used to.
