Wedding Planning 101- "How to choose a song for your first dance"
Your first dance as husband and wife will be a special moment that you will truly never forget. All eyes will be upon you as you signify this new beginning between the two of you, and choosing a song to dance to should be the simplest task during the wedding planning process. Here are some ways to select a song that will make this once in a lifetime moment extraordinary.
Let your groom choose:
Grooms are often excluded from the wedding planning itself, so why not let him have the responsibility of choosing the first song to dance to? When I got married, I wanted my husband-to-be to determine what song we would dance to on our wedding day. I asked him to pick a song that symbolized his feelings for me and I wanted it to be a surprise. I can not tell you how incredible the feelings were when we started to dance and I listened to the song that he chose especially for me, and as we danced, he sang the words softly in my ear. It was a moment that I will never forget.
Dance to YOUR song:
Most couples have a song that reminds them of each other. Think about different times in your relationship when you heard a certain song and thought about your significant other. If you do not have a song, then the two of you together could find music that you mutually agree on. Choosing a song together that has symbolic meaning to your relationship can be romantic in it, but dancing to the song on your wedding day will be more emotional than you realize. Take dance lessons together and have your first dance choreographed to this special song that you chose together.
Dance to your Parent's song:
Honor your parents by using the same song that they once danced to at their wedding. The bride or grooms parents may have a song that is emblematic of their life together and they would be proud to have you dance to their song.
Dance to your own beat:
Chose a song that defines the kind of couple the two of you are. Maybe you're more of conservative type couple who enjoys a slow tempo ballad that makes it easy to dance to and sets a very romantic setting. On the other hand, you could be somewhat of a revolutionist who sees the first dance as an opportunity to bring some liveliness to the dance floor immediately. Modern day couples have combined these two types of personalities and made the first day memorable and very interesting. They take two completely different songs and mix them into one number that takes the crowd by surprise. The beginning may start off slow and sentimental, and then finish upbeat and contemporary.
Hey Mr. DJ;
Talk to the DJ or band and see what they recommend for the first dance. They may have a song in mind that you would have never thought of. Make sure you know what the lyrics say ahead of time. It's not appropriate to have sexually explicit lyrics on your wedding day. Save that for the honeymoon! The lyrics should speak to your relationship and some meaning to both of you for sure.
Dancing for the first time as husband and wife is going to be a memory that will last a lifetime. Chose a song that coordinates with your wedding style, your unique personalities and your guests' own experiences as you search your record collection and song lists to find that one or maybe two symbolic songs.
