to me at first.
I took comfort in the words of Scripture, "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do now sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you, by worrying can add a single hour to his life? ...But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well." (Matthew 6:25-34).
Pride never ends well. I know that. God took care of me in those early days, because whenever I would become prideful, He would take me down a notch and lovingly teach me that all I had came from Him. Though it sometimes seemed harsh, in retrospect, I realize He dealt with me quite gently.
Not so with some of our other friends whom I just mentioned. Their downfall came swiftly and painfully, and worst of all, they did not have God in their lives. With no loving heavenly Father to turn to, I am not sure how they have managed to make it through.
Some words of truth on the subject: Proverbs 3:34, "He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble.
Proverbs 16:18, "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."
Proverbs 18:12, "Before his downfall a man's heart is proud, but humility comes before honor."
You likely know people in your own circle of friends who are like Dan and Debbie and Jim. You can relate to what I am saying. If you don't know any proud and haughty people personally, you've certainly heard the stories of the famous examples. Think of the pride and the downfall of people like Adolph Hitler or Sadaam Hussein. Consider the tremendous pride of the builders, owners and operators of the Titanic, when they proclaimed, "God Himself cannot sink this ship!" There are thousands of good examples. God is not mocked and He hates sinful pride. Proverbs 16:5, "The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: they will not go unpunished."
It was pride which caused Satan to fall from grace. "...You said in your heart... I will make myself like the Most High.'" (Isaiah 14:12-14). It was pride which caused the fall of Adam and Eve in the garden and brought sin and death to the human race. It is pride that Satan tried using to tempt Jesus in the wilderness. It is pride that continues to afflict mankind.
Why is pride so bad? Because it causes us to believe that
