Electric vehicles are not the answer to the problem of high gas prices today. I say this with a couple of key points in mind. At this point they are more expensive to purchase than automobiles that run on gasoline. Some require special outlets (they have to charged on a nightly basis), would they be included with the cost of the car or will they be considered a luxury item? I'm not trying to be wise, this is a real concern. And what about the impact it will have on electrical usage? We have consider this point.
Let's start off with talking about the expense. The reason everyone is so concerned with rising gas prices is simple. They can not afford it. Following this thought process, how would it be feasible to assume that they could afford to go out and buy a new electronic vehicle? I for one, don't believe it is. Unfortunately, I am speaking as one of those people who would never be able to afford it right now. So if people can't afford them, how can it solve any problem? Most of use will not be able to use them.
Now let's talk about the maintenance necessary, which would be of course, the charging issue. The idea of cars runnning on electricity is an excellent one. But I believe it is still a work in progress. Where will we be plugging them into? Some will be able to be plugged into an electrical outlet that is already in place in most homes. Then there are some that may require a charger that can be placed outside of the home. Others may require that owners install a special outlet in their home that will be capable of handling the amount of voltage required to fully charge it. For argument's sake let's say that most people will probably want the one that plugs into the already established outlets in our homes. Which brings me to my next concern.
My next concern is the increased use of electricity. I can't help but wonder if we would be trading in one problem for another. We will be overloading our electrical plants? Will they be able to keep up with the new demands of everyone plugging in their cars at night? They already have a difficult time in the summer when everyone has on their air conditioners. And what about the cost of electricity. Is it possible that we are just trading in expense for another? I worry that this may be an outcome.
As I stated before, I believe that electric vehicles are an excellent idea. I think we need to have more answers before we look to them to solve the gas price problem.
