When a couple is having difficulties conceiving a child, questions will arise regarding both the male's and the female's fertility. Although it's a common misconception that it's usually the female who contributes to infertility problems, it is between 20-35 % of cases where the male is responsible.
Just as the female reproductive organs are in intricate system that can have their problems, so do the male reproductive system. It is usually not until a couple has been trying to conceive a child without success do we realize how important these systems are and how we take them for granted. There are many factors that contribute to male infertility, those that range from lifestyle choices, genetics and minor surgeries in the past.
If you are a couple who have been trying to conceive a child for over twelve months, following are some of the options available to treat male infertility.
DIET
We know diet is important in regards to so many aspects of our lives, but extremely so when it comes to male fertility. To encourage and improve healthy sperm, a man requires a healthy body for maximum success.
A well balanced diet, which includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and water intake, must be consumed. If you're overweight, lose some weight and exercise but ensure exercise is not excessive. Alcohol consumption must be kept to a minimum as it contributes to defective sperm, as does smoking.
Your diet should also consist of vitamins, including zinc, which is very important for the male reproductive system as it encourages sperm production.
KEEP EM COOL
Throw away those groin huggers and get yourself some boxer shorts. Loose fitting underwear allows air to circulate around the testes whereas wearing tight underwear allows heat to be applied to them. This heat can contribute to a decrease in sperm production.
Try and avoid hot baths and showers, saunas and as well as heated pools.
DRUG THERAPY
If it has been found that the problems that are occurring are due to hormonal or infection problems, it will be treated with medication.
If there has been a medical situation in the past that has caused an infection to take place that lowers sperm count, such as an STD or a urinary problem, your doctor will advise of which drugs will treat the problem.
SURGERY
