When it comes to health and nutrition, pizza is often considered a dirty word. Greasy pepperoni, bubbling cheese and ultra thick crust can be a diet nightmare. However, when prepared properly, pizza can be a wonderful source of nutrition. Below are some guidelines to preparing your own pizza at home, and information about ordering a guilt-free pizza when dining out.

Delicious, Nutritious at-home pizza:

1.Start with the crust. Pizza crust can be the unhealthiest part of a pizza. When preparing pizza at home, choose a very thin crust. To up the nutrient factor, choose a whole wheat pizza crust or prepare a personal pizza on a whole wheat wrap.

2.Use a pizza sauce that is low in sodium and sugar or prepare your own. To prepare your own, purchase a canned tomato sauce and dress it up with a variety of spices and herbs. Spread a thin layer on your pizza.

3.Go easy on the cheese. Pick a cheese that is part skim. Also, use just enough cheese to cover the pizza.

4.Put plenty of vegetables on your pizza. Go vegetable crazy. Use all of your favorite vegetables on your pizza. Virtually any vegetable is suitable to use on your pizza. Artichokes, onions, peppers, and tomatoes are all wonderful choices.

5.Play with toppings. If you want to include a meat topping choose healthier options such as turkey pepperoni, chicken or substitute meat with mushrooms.

Ordering out:

1.Pizzerias often offer different types of crust. If they are not listed in the menu, ask about the different types of crusts and choose the thinnest option.

2.Tell the server that you do not want a lot of cheese or sauce. Using the minimal amount of sauce and cheese will reduce unwanted fat and calories.

3.Order every vegetable that is offered. Many places will allow you to order items that are not listed for the restaurants version of a veggie pizza. Most pizzerias offer salads, and ordering salad options such as tomatoes is not out of the question.

4.Keep plenty of napkins handy. When your pizza arrives, dab the top of the pizza with napkins to remove grease. This will help cut down on calories and fat. Use the napkins to dab grease until the napkins are no longer absorbing grease.

5.Remember to not over-eat. Eating three or more slices of pizza is easy. Order a salad or vegetable plate to munch on while the pizza is being prepared if over-eating could be a problem for you. Just remember to not drench your vegetables in a super fatty dressing. When the pizza arrives, try to consume two slices or less.
