The Dungeons and Dragons stigma

have titles like the Book of Vile Darkness and Fiend Folio and have warning labels on them that state "for mature readers only." The old miniatures (toys) have returned and the TV show is back on the air.

Players no longer get labeled as devil-worshippers, and many of the Christians, Conservatives and Moral Majorities that had railed against the game only twenty years ago are now hailing it as a positive outlet for youths and adults. Many Christians (even pastors and ministers) play the game and even have their own advocacy sites. The worst label a gamer might get now is "Geek" or "Freak".

Stigma is defines as "a mark of disgrace or infamy; a stain or reproach, as on one's reputation." Aptly put, Dungeons & Dragons did have such a stigma, but I think I can safely say it no longer does. It has become acceptable, laudable, I dare say even admirable. What many had to play in secret is now being proudly proclaimed in public. Much like adultery is no longer something to be ashamed of. Cursing has become acceptable, as has lawlessness and ungodliness and immorality in general. I can safely say these things also had a stigma at one time, but no longer.

My father would no doubt say that times have changed. I would sadly agree.

I played the game for twenty-five of the last thirty years it has been on the book shelves. I have been, up until recently, a very vocal advocate and player of the game. I have (in the last year) come to see the truth of many of the claims that have come against the game over the years. As much in depth knowledge as I have gleaned over the last quarter century about Dungeons & Dragons leads me to believe the adversaries were, in many cases, correct. And I confess I am somewhat perplexed: I am wondering exactly what in heaven's name happened.

I am wondering what happened to all those who had so vehemently spoke out against the game. Maybe they have they all been converted, silenced, or deceived. I am concerned what happened to the legions of mighty prayer warriors that had marched in the face of evil, who were not afraid to speak out against things they knew to be immoral, unethical or ungodly. I am thinking that it suddenly become acceptable to turn our backs upon our children's welfare and allow them to engage in a game that imperiled their moral and spiritual wellbeing. It burdens me to know that many who would give no quarter to lies and deception are now deceived and are lying to themselves.

The Dungeons & Dragons stigma is not nearly as aversive as it once was. Which is a shame, since then it might be avoided. As it well should be.
