Don't have a typical get-together on your deck, have a Hawaiian luau! Exotic Hawaiian food and fun decorations definitely beat the traditional hamburger and hot-dog cook out. It can be a daunting process to turn such a unique idea into reality, but these ideas should help you get started.
What exactly is a luau?
The real definition of a luau by Hawaiian culture is a feast of Hawaiian foods. They are often accompanied by hula dancers and other live entertainment with music. A roasted pig is usually the main traditional dish at a luau, just as Turkey is the main dish at Thanksgiving. Creating a complete luau in your backyard may not be a realistic idea, but you can sure simulate one and still have a lot of fun.
FOOD
The first thing for any luau party agenda is the food. Find traditional Hawaiian food recipes, and specifically Hawaiian foods found in luaus. This cuisine is not the norm, so be sure to read the recipes ahead of time, and have all the right ingredients. Do your research and have fun with the food-just make sure you have the roasted pig!
DECORATIONS
Tropical flowers, fresh fruit, seashells, and bamboo are all apart of the Hawaiian luau scene. To light your deck or back yard, use bamboo torches and/or appropriately themed string lighting. Something as simple as a pineapple can be a cheap and realistic decoration for your party, as well as a food you can indulge in later. Costume accessories for your visitors should also be considered. Tiki masks and lei's are well known luau objects.
Your food can be decorated accordingly as well. When making your drinks, include a paper umbrella and fresh fruit on top. Have fresh fruit bowls, perhaps in a Hawaiian-themed bowl. If you have the time and energy, consider cooking the pig in a traditional rotating fire pit.
ACTIVITIES
A traditional luau greeting involves kissing your guest on the cheek and giving them a flower lei. If your not comfortable with the kissing, at least give them the flower lei.
Set up a buffet styled eating area, and allow your guests to eat and enjoy themselves. Trying the new cuisine is a big part of the experience.
A limbo contest is a fun way to socialize and keep your guests in a larger group. Do it with a bamboo stick, and keep it feeling tropical.
Try hula dancing. Rent a video or hire a professional to show you how its done. Have extra grass skirts so your visitors can try it out too, of course.
Hopefully this list can give you some good ideas on getting started with a luau styled party. Not only is it fun and creative, but your visitors will also know you took time planning this event for them, and should be grateful. Luaus are ideal for larger parties, such as business parties or reunions. Have fun, and good luck!
