Time management tips for college athletes

It can be difficult for any college student to organize their time, but when you are a student athlete you have even more commitments than your peers. Making time for games and practices without sacrificing classes, homework, organizations, clubs, and social events can seem impossible. Don't let your dream of playing college sports slip through your fingers, but don't sacrifice your grades either.

1. Prioritize.

If you are playing a college sport, much of your time is spoken for. While there are an infinite amount of clubs and groups to join on any college campus, your time is limited. Don't try to do everything or you will end up burnt out. Consider your options and prioritize. Do you really have time to join a fraternity or sorority on top of classes and your team? Just because your friends are participating in an activity does not mean it is right for you or your schedule. Limit yourself to just the activities or groups that you are most passionate about. Your schedule will thank you.

2. Make a grid.

Once a week, sit down with your schedule for the next seven days. Create a to-do list for that time period. I do mine in the form of a grid - across the top I list the days of the week and down the left-hand side I create categories. For example, you might include things like chores, classes and homework, sports commitments, and social events. Fill each box with the things that you need to get done that week, and hang it somewhere visible. As you complete each project you can cross it off the list. Keeping yourself organized is the only way to deal with having so many large time commitments.

3. Take advantage of traveling.

While it may be tempting to sleep or fraternize while you are traveling to away games, bring along your homework. If you can get some of that reading out of the way on the bus, there will be no need to worry about cramming it in at the last minute.

4. Ask for help when you need it.

Professors, coaches, resident advisors, and counselors are all available to help you succeed. Your university wants you to be successful at everything you do. If you are confused or find yourself falling behind, approach your teacher for help or advice. You may also want to consider a tutor for your classes if you are struggling. Having personalized help can be a huge advantage - he or she will be able to assess your learning style and help you in the areas you need to work on the most.

5. Make time for yourself.

This can seem like the most impossible task of all for college athletes. With all the pressure to stay competitive on the field and in the classroom, how are you going to find time to take care of yourself? Even small increments can help your outlook. If you take care of your mind and body, you will be better prepared to do your best whether in sports or academics. Relaxing now and again is important.

You can succeed as a student and a college athlete during your time at school. It will take planning and dedication, but you won't regret your hard work. Just stay focused!
