the universe, we accumulate physical limitations that keep us from enjoying this place in time to the fullest.
We also begin to realize that time in now our enemy. It passes much quicker than it used to. We may have lost a loved one...a mother or father. We lose friends along the way, and realize as we grow older, that there is less time ahead of us than what has passed behind. Time becomes more precious to us.
After the loss of someone close to us, we come face to face with our own mortality. This life we've become attached to is not unending. There was a beginning and there will be an ending. That thought creeps into our thinking unawares. We search for the "meaning of life" and if we haven't already done so, start a relationship or deepen our closeness with the Creator. We begin to evaluate what we've done and who we've become and knowingly or unknowingly, begin to prepare for the next phase of our existence.
Did we use honesty and integrity in our dealings with others? Did we share what we knew in order to help others? Did we try to use wisdom and compassion in dealing with our families or raising our children? Do we have regrets for things left undone, or for wrong choices made?
Facing our own mortality and recognizing we are going to face the unknown causes us to change the way we look at the world as a whole. It is time to complete unfinished tasks or strive to complete our goals. It is time to repair any damage to family relationships and to cherish what we have. It is a time to embrace peace in all things. We realize life is too short to live in strife or turmoil. If we are a spiritual person, we realize that obtaining material things are not the most important thing in life. Godly matters gain more importance. We strive to deepen our prayer life and strengthen our relationship with God.
Growing old is a point in time, a phase, a chapter at the end of a journey that began long ago. We must enjoy the fruits of our labors and take satisfaction in the accomplishments obtained. We must embrace and revel in this moment in time for as long as it lasts, and begin to prepare for the next chapter.
