How to install a home bar

Planning to turn that extra space in your home into a home bar will provide a great entertaining space. Whether you are do-it-yourself or hiring a contractor, be aware of the elements that make a great bar. Proper planning and consideration of mood and atmosphere will determine how comfortable the space becomes. Always remember to measure twice and cut once.

Choose a room that is away from sleeping areas and close to a bathroom. A family room or basement is often the best choice. Do some quick price checking and put together a budget amount that you can afford. Spend some time thinking about the style you wish to create and impart. Style elements can be added or deleted later as your bar matures. Spend the majority of your budget on the bar itself, it will be the focal point in the room and the least likely item to be updated later. Color choices depend on the room and your style but a darker ceiling and walls will allow more control of mood with lighting.

Fundamentals every bar should include are counter space with a small sink for mixing drinks, an elevated serving counter for the drinks, and some comfortable chairs or stools for your guests to relax in. Add a bar fridge for beer and mix, and/or a wine cooler. Proper cabinetry for glassware should be easily accessible by the bartender as should the cabinetry for the Liquors and Spirits. Make sure you have enough space to keep any regular use items out on the counter, such as blenders. A media cabinet should also be accessible to control music and TV sets.

Adding entertainment depends on the mood you wish to create. It is a good idea to have a TV behind the bar, as well another for watching. Having games such as darts or if space permits a pool table off to the side also provides entertainment. Provide comfortable seating for lounging, side and coffee tables for drinks. It's also a great idea to have space that can be cleared for dancing.

Proper plumbing, electrical outlets and lighting should be carefully considered. Many soft lights are better than one bright light and give control over the mood. Plan the sink location close to existing plumbing and have an electrician install several outlets for the fridges, small appliances, countertop lighting, TVs, and stereo. Also have the electrician install lighting on dimmer switches for the whole room. All lighting should be accessed from behind the bar. Install fans and vents to allow for good air circulation.

Your bar counter should be the focal point of the room. The bartender should be in control of the room with easy access to all of the amenities. With the lighting, control of music and TV the bartender has control of the room and your bar will be a success.
