Poetry: Dreams

Dreams Descent

Star by sextant guides
On the deep and open sea
The shipped dream
In whose command
A dreaded curse and Ahab schemes

When the dream by star so
Hope inspires that captain
Drive expectant wins
And takes by lash and beating drum

The galley slave to heave, to ho,
To heave to ho, by sweat and blood
That boat is drawn, and on so on
Without rest or sleep or peace

Through thick and fog and storms that rend
Till founders final at the end
And in the cold and bitter deep
The darkest dreams in silence keep.

But over all eternal hang
Those stars of madness dark complete
And in the march of running nights
Draws the unhinged captain's sight
