Having a cover letter in conjunction with your resume may just be the deciding factor if you get the job or not. Having a cover letter demonstrates professionalism and diligence in ones work ethic. A cover letter is a brief statement about you, why you want the position and how you are best suited. For teens just coming into the workforce, this may be a hard thing to do first off. This article will assist you in creating that perfect letter that the potential employer will remember.
1. Create a List of Skill-Sets
To start off before you even start writing the letter, you need to brainstorm the skills that you already hold. For example if you have ever played on a sports team, you can emphasize the teamwork skill, if you have ever had a big school project you can emphasize time management and responsibility. Everything that you have learned and experienced in your life is a skill, most of which are directly transferable in the work-force.
2. Research the Employer
Employers like to see people who have initiative. If you demonstrate knowledge of their business then they will look highly on that because its shows that you have great interest and will make you stand out from the competition.
3. What Makes you the Best Choice?
When your competing for a job, its exactly that, a competition. There could be several applications for the same position but only a few openings so obviously the employer wants the best people for the job. Brainstorm aspects of yourself relating to experiences, skills, etc. By doing this you will come up with situations that show exactly what the employer is looking for which can and will be used in your cover letter.
4. Rough Draft
When you have completed the first 3 points, its now time to carry on to the rough draft. The meat of the cover letter consists of 3 key paragraphs much like an essay. It contains the introduction which is a introductory to yourself and why you are applying for the job. The Second paragraph is how you are best suited for the job. The third paragraph reinforces much of the introduction and provides contact information so you may be contacted usually for an follow up interview or job offer.
Please keep in mind that the cover letter is a short and to the point description about the above. Your cover letter should be no more than 3 paragraphs and should all fit on one page because the employer is reading a dozen other ones and probably does want to spend 45min. Just reading yours.
