Preparation Can Equal Success
A great percentage of what college revolves around is based upon social, emotional and clear communication skills. For the college student classrooms are set up with numerous pupils being involved and participating in various situations. Within each classroom the college student attends daily one of the key elements is classroom participation and group work. The educational goal is to try and help all to learn and live in a very social environment; this includes those college students who want to live on campus as well. Those who choose to live on campus have an additional situation to adjust to, which is dealing with the behavioral aspects of their dorm mates. The students must know how to get along well and interact with those they live with as they often times share very small and cramped quarters with a total stranger. Whether research, lab work or building the next great invention is involved- collaboration is a part of college life. The students must be able to handle themselves and be able to co-exist with their fellow alumni. Undoubtedly we all have butterflies in our stomachs, sweaty palms and dry mouths prior to a situation which may call upon us to be involved on an emotional communicative and social level. For the most part people in situations that arise such as this can move forward and deal with it. Adjusting their anxieties and being able to perform to the level expected of them in these various academic acts most students can muster enough self control and rise to the occasion. Success for most students is their regalia of triumph; however this isn't the case for those who have the disability of Asperger Syndrome (AS).
American colleges are designed to focus and function in a format that is filled with social and communicative styles. For those with the disability of AS though the ability to perform in a socialized and at times chaotic manner is almost an impossible feat. Yet the AS graduate from college has enormous contributing attributes to singularly work on a task of the smallest detail. In our high tech world the talents of detailed and singular visionaries can make an AS student very valuable to an ever changing industry.
AS people are recognized for excelling in the areas of above average intellectual functioning; however the day to day social, communications and behavioral aspects of college life are a stumbling block to them. In Michael Dillon's article, "Creating Support for College
