Exercise for the older person

Water aerobics is an excellent activity for both young and old alike. Whether done in an instructor-led class or as a self-directed activity, water aerobics offers the benefits of traditional land aerobics without the drawbacks' that may preclude an older or injured individual from participating. The benefits of water aerobics are many.

Improved Circulation and Temperature Regulation

The pressure exerted by water helps maintain good blood flow to the extremities, a great benefit to those with diabetes or other conditions affecting circulation. In addition, moderate water temperatures of approximately 84 degrees is beneficial to those with arthritis, help joints and muscles stay warm and limber, while evaporation of water from exposed skin helps keep the body's core temperature lower, limiting the chance of heat exhaustion.

Reduced Impact
Impact from water aerobics can vary from high to no impact depending on the water depth. Through the use of flotation belts or other devices, one can exercise completely suspended in water, without any impact, ideal for those suffering joint injuries or damage.

Balanced and Gentle Muscle Conditioning
As you move through the water, you will experience equal resistance in all directions of movement. This not only offers a more efficient workout by working two or more opposing muscle groups at the same time, but it also ensures that opposing muscle groups build strength equally, protecting against injury. Good muscle tone can be maintained and built through the use of equipment that provides a gentle strength training workout.

Improved Balance and Core Strength
Water offers a safe and supportive environment for improving balance and core muscle strength. The gentle pressure of the water offers support while engaging in balance-building exercises as well as a soft landing if you happen to lose your balance. Exercises that make use of floating and changing positions, cause shifts in your center gravity, engaging your core (back and abdominal) muscles to maintain balance. Strengthening these core muscles helps guard against back pain and injury.

A Well Rounded Workout for Any Age
So whether you chose to water jog, engage in a water aerobics class, or simply practice some gentle strength training and balance exercises in your own pool, water aerobics offers a safe, gentle and effective exercise program suitable to persons of any age and almost any condition.
