Being a human means different things to different people. Personally, it entails:
1. Experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions. Who hasn't experienced the joy of welcoming a newborn into this world? Or the sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one? At one point or another, we have all experienced a feeling of anger towards someone. Show me the human who's emotionless and I'll pay a million bucks!
2. Encountering highs and lows as we go through this gift we call life. Anyone who's been fired from a job will tell you just how depressing it can be. On the flipside, the employee that just got promoted knows nothing but delight. Even the most successful man in this planet has at one point had to endure failure. And out of the failures, came forth success. Many have experienced the disappointment that comes with being dumped. And the jubilation, satisfaction and sense of fulfillment that accompanies getting married. Clearly, we all have those moments when we feel like we are soaring like eagles and those times when we just don't seem to be making any inroads. As one wise man put it, life is like a valley it has its ups and downs.
3. Having that void' that can only be filled by that one special person destiny saw fit for you. From the days of biblical Adam, man wasn't meant to be alone. That is why God created Eve; to be Adam's companion and soul mate. Things aren't any different nowadays, no matter how much we may try to run away from the truth. We all need that special someone' in our lives. That person who make our liver quiver. The man/woman you just can't get enough of, and around whom you experience an indescribable sensation. In short, we all need love!
4. Being obsessed with money, power and perfection. The reality on the ground is that ours is a materialistic society. How else can one explain a billionaire caught in a defrauding scheme? Today's human wants as much money as he can possibly get. The sad part s that they keep it all to themselves, as opposed to sharing it around. (The one exception here would have to be Bill Gates, who is an outstanding philanthropist.)
As far as power goes, we seem keen on possessing the sort of power that will give us leverage over our peers. No stone is usually left unturned in the quest to achieve power, and absolute power at that.
The growing number of plastic surgeons out there is evidence that perfection is nowadays very much sought after. We want perfect looks, perfect smiles, perfect curves and the works.
5. Making smart choices as regards the utilization of the most important resource of all time. There's a time to work and a time to play. A time to sow and a time to reap. A time to eat and a time to sleep.
6. Developing relationships. From parents to siblings, friends to spouses, lawyers to doctors, humanity is at best, a chain of relationships.
