Evaluating the real importance of money

by The Schmooze

Created on: June 30, 2008

Much as we may try to play down the value of money, the fact of the matter is that money is very important in the modern day world. Think that I am just on of those materialistic buggers? Let me prove to you that I'm not:

The basic needs are stated food, clothing and shelter. Someone should tell me the secret to walking into a clothes store and sweet talking the store owner into giving away his/her clothes for free. I would really like to have the contacts of the realtors that give away property for free. I'd love to live near the farmer who calls all his neighbours to enjoy the harvest of his crops. Then again, that can only happen in dreamland. Evidently, we all need money to acquire what we deem to be the basic needs.

The value of a good education - the key to a bright future - cannot be overemphasized enough. Save for those who are lucky enough to get scholarships, we need a good chunk of hard cash to achieve this good education we so crave.

There is also the small matter of dating. We all want to make our spouses feel special. Take them to a place that shows them just how much they mean to us. We want to buy our special ones gifts for their birthdays or on Valentine's Day. We at times feel obliged to take them to beach resorts for weekends or vacations. If anyone has an idea as to just how we can achieve such targets without the dollar bill, please get in touch.

Unfortunately, situations arise where we find ourselves in the wrong side of the law. Be it those petty traffic offenses or lawsuits filed by exes. Without a good lawyer, some time behind bars is the most likely result. And a good lawyer needs good payment!

My folks always told me, "work hard but play harder." I oblige. Going to watch football matches or just hanging out with your buddies at the local joint is by no means cheap. Before you label this a luxury, let me beat you to the punch we all need to unwind, one way or the other.

At one point or another, man is bound to fall ill. That's when we turn to our dear doctors; those geniuses who understand the intricacies of how God intended our bodies to function. But don't be fooled into thinking that you can get the best treatment for free (unless, of course, you are in a disaster hit zone.) For you to access the best treatment out there, you'll be forced to part ways with some of your hard earned cash.

There's also the perennial headache we call our bills. Furthermore, that our society is stratified along the lines of money and income speaks volumes as to how important money is.
