Movie reviews: The Strangers (2008)

the wall is splattered with blood, and a bloody knife lies on the floor. The call is being placed by two young boys that have wandered into the house the next morning, and they frantically tell the operator that there is blood everywhere and that there are people in the home. This is all we hear before the title credits come up and the movie actually begins, but a chill has already fallen over the audience. It's clear that something very serious has occurred on the night of February 11th, 2005.

We cut to Kristen (Liv Tyler) and James (Scott Speedman) arriving at the summer house after leaving a wedding reception, tension thick between the couple. They discuss which bedrooms they will be sleeping in as they go inside, and James makes a call to a friend, asking him to come pick him up. The house is adorned with rose petals and candles, and soon it is clear that James proposed to Kristen, and was rejected. They eat an awkward meal, during which James insists that Kristen keep the ring anyway. After a few tears and exchanges, the two begin to make love. They are interrupted, however, with a knock on the door. Not knowing who would be at the door so late into the night, the two decide to investigate. They find a young girl with long blond hair standing there; the porch light appears to be burnt out, casting her face in shadows. She asks if "Tamara" is home, and once they tell her that they don't know what she's talking about, that she must have the wrong house, she turns and walks away, telling them that she'll see them later. As James reaches out to check the light, discovering that the bulb was loosened, it is instantly clear what has just occurred; the girl was simply checking to see if anyone was home. By opening the door, the couple had just sealed their fate. The audience is aware of this, but Kristen and James are not and they go back inside, puzzled, but unafraid.

James offers to run to the store and get Kristen another pack of cigarettes, leaving her alone in the house. She lights a fire and decides to try on the wedding ring, which gets stuck on her finger. All seems quite until a loud pounding on the door startles Kristen. A voice asks if Tamara is home, and she begins to get nervous. She calls James and asks him to stay on the phone with her, until the phone dies. She plugs her cell phone in and walks into the kitchen, getting herself a glass of water. As she stands at the sink, a man wearing a white mask steps into the left side of the frame, standing
