Publishing your first book

Publishing your first book can be a real stressful time in your life, but I personally have learned that it can also be extremely adventurous, challenging and rewarding all at the same time. I do believe that these ideas are all up to the individual wanting to spend the time to write the book, having people read the book for errors, and then finding a publisher. Here is what I did to publish my first book which I hope will lead into getting it sold on both the internet and eventually in bookstores.

I began writing when I was fifteen years old. I have always wanted to tell a story, but I wanted to do it in writing. I enjoy writing in different genres but I thought it important to do the proper research to see what people are interested in reading. Mystery crime dramas, fictional legal stories (John Gresham style), science fiction and fantasy, war novels both fiction and non-fiction (my first book fell in this category), ghost stories, etc. are some of the areas of interest for people to read. Another genre that has become extremely popular in the last few years has been in children's books. I did not get published in my early years because I was not really ready to become a full-fledged author and some top published authors gave me some great criticism which led me to continue writing. I have numerous manuscripts and titles in my filing cabinet at home but really have never made the effort to get them finished or published. Within the last year, after doing careful research, I found a website on the internet called Lulu.com. It seems to be a big hit not only for those who want to publish their writings in book form, but for people who want to publish their art work, calendars and a great deal more. This was a blessing for me, because I really did not have the money to have a publishing company mass market and mass produce my book.

Not only do I self-publish, but I also advertise my personal storefront from Lulu.com on other writing sites as well as on my own website. This has gotten people interested in my book and I have had the opportunity to sell some. I know that it is going to take some time and a writer who wants to be published has to understand that it can take some time as well as be a challenging time. So, it is extremely important to be patient, understand that it could take some time to be recognized and to make money with your writings, pick your interests and your genres carefully and do all of the necessary research to be successful.
