Let's face it, we've all gotten a little down in the dumps about our bodies, especially after the holidays roll through, bringing with them a whole slew of our favorite foods. So, we decide to join a gym in the hopes of dropping those few extra pounds that seem to hang on no matter how many celery sticks we eat. A gym membership can be a great undertaking, if you know how to utilize all it has to offer.
One of the first mistakes people make is quickly jumping into an exercise program without any guidance from a professional. In the excitement of the moment and the variety of weight machines, free weights, and cardio equipment available, people have a tendency to want to try everything. This results in overall body soreness, fatigue and aggravation. The best thing to do is to contact someone at the front desk and ask for a tour of the facility and some information about the different areas of the gym. Many facilities offer a free evaluation from a fitness professional upon joining. You'll even get some advice about what type of exercise program you should try.
The next mistake people make is competing with their fellow gym members. Men will typically compare the amount of weight they life with those around them. This is a great way to injure yourself, by trying to lift weight that you aren't ready for. Instead, focus on your own program and slowly build up. You won't be lifting anything if you hurt yourself. Similarly, women tend to compare their bodies to those of the other female members. This can lead to poor body image or even disordered eating patterns in an attempt to achieve someone else's body type. Instead, focus on your health and well-being. It's not just about losing a few pounds, it's about changing your lifestyle for the better. Both genders need to remember that everyone has a different response to exercise and you have to do what is right for your body.
Another common mistake gym members make is having tunnel vision. They stick to the same routine for months on end and wonder why they haven't seen results in weeks. Your weight loss will level out if you don't challenge yourself regularly. Don't have tunnel vision about your workout. Instead, try taking some different classes that the gym has to offer. In most cases, beginners are welcome and encouraged by the more experienced members. What have you got to lose by trying something new? You may find a new hobby and you'll meet new people too.
Gyms have many great advantages, but they can also be detrimental if you make these common mistakes. Don't focus on those around you when you're working out. Focus only on yourself and doing what's right for your body. Ask for help when venturing onto a new machine or trying a new exercise. Weight and cardio machines can be dangerous if you don't know how to use them, so take the time to ask someone to show you how. Finally, take advantage of what the gym can offer. Try some new classes, partake in free health screenings, experiment on new machines. Your body will thank you in the end.
