What you need to know about keeping parrots

There are 5 specific things you need to know about keeping parrots. After you have learned these then you will need to research the specific type of bird you have or want to get in order to learn more detailed information. Always, always do your own research. If possible consult a vet that specializes in aviary medicine.

The people that assist in many pet stores more often than not do not have specialized training and may only tell you what product specifications that they are familiar with. As a former pet store owner and a person who hand raises many types of parrots I have seen the effects of this poor information line and it is never good for your bird.

1. Housing.
Cages for any parrot need to fit very specific requirements. They should allow room for the bird to move around easily and fully spread their wings no matter which way they are facing. Bar spacing needs to be small enough that they can not squeeze through it.

Bar width needs to be thick so that they can not bite through it. This is especially important so the bird is not injured by broken bars or does not get stuck trying to escape through the new hole they created. If you have the space to accommodate it, building your own indoor aviary is always a wonderful way to house your bird. Be sure to use only safe products. Birds chew on everything and ingestion of hazardous materials can easily kill your bird.

2. Feeding and Watering.
Parrots can not live solely on seeds and nuts. This is a very poor diet that can cause a variety of health problems. There are special parrot pellet foods available on the market in a variety of flavors your bird will love. If you purchase an older bird then you should definitely wean him from any bad diets on to a pellet diet. I always use Zupreme Pellet Food. My birds, especially my Rose Breasted Cockatoo, prefer the fruit blend.

Always feed your birds fruits, vegetables, unsalted nuts, whole grains (cheerios are great), and other health foods. Don't use canned foods the preservatives are not healthy. Seed mixes should only be used as an occasional treat and not a part of every day diet. People food is also a great treat for parrots. French fries, steak, chicken, shrimp, and pasta if given very small amounts and only on occasion will make your bird very happy. Avoid fried foods, foods high in salt, and high in cholesterol.

Never feed your bird apple seeds, avocados, chocolate, caffeine, wild bird seed, or black oil sunflower seeds. These are potentially deadly foods.
