It is difficult the grab the audience's attention with a follow-up movie to six very successful seasons of a TV series. Yet "Sex and the City The Movie" seems to have found the right key.
You could think of it as a seventh season condensed into a two-and-a-half-hour long film: our New York ladies (Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte) are now three years older and have all moved on in life following the paths that had been set for them over the last few episodes on TV.
The four friends haven't lost touch - even though Samantha now lives in LA - and we enter their lives again in time for when Carrie and Mr Big decide to get married. Then, in perfect Sex and The City style, we follow the happenings that disrupt the daily routines of all of them.
Many reviews criticize the film for being shallow, the glorification of capitalism and fashion addiction. For sure, if you are looking for a deep story that will make you ponder over the problems that our world faces, you are likely to be let down.
But as the fans of the HBO TV program know, "Sex and The City" is light entertainment and does not intend to encourage deep soul searching. What it succeeds in doing, though, is depict some aspects of the urban lifestyle, the advantages and difficulties of living in big cities, the importance of close friendships in a frantic metropolitan environment where human relations seem to be as disposable and fickle as the consumer items that are glorified in the movie.
Apart from the obvious observation that SATC is about single women in NY and their sex lives, there is a lot more in the movie: happiness, major letdowns, friendship, betrayal, fun, a newborn baby, glamour and fashion. The leitmotif is forgiveness, but the plot also briefly touches on the themes of trust and self-fulfilment.
Unfortunately there is enough material in the script for a whole new season of episodes, which means the characters are not always very well portrayed because of lack of time devoted to them. This is particularly the case for Mr Big (played by Chris Noth), whose emotions and difficulties are neglected to the point that his actions seem absurd at times.
Most of the cast is from the original series and we already know of their ability to play their roles well. It is only the four girls, though, that are really given a chance to bring a wide range of emotions to us in the movie, because we don't really get to see the others enough.
Among the secondary roles, an endearing performance is offered by the sweet
