My mother was very spiritual and pious. She was also fiercely protective of her children. I was the oldest and her only son. I had four sisters that I could barely tolerate. It goes without saying that I spent huge amounts of time with my father. I would even go so far as to say that I dominated much of his time. He is my mentor and my hero, even since age has finally caught him and I see chinks in his armor. He shares these thoughts with only me.
There came a time that my parents split. It was because my father had an affair that resulted in another child. I wasn't aware of the child for many years, nor the affair. Mother protected us from the ugly truth of the real world. She must have thought that she was doing us a favor, but sometimes I resent not having a little brother to interact with back then. However, we must leave the past where it belongs. I'm getting to know my little brother now. He is a hero in my eyes, too. A man with courage I could only imagine. A warrior.
Although my mothers piety didn't really rub off on me, her spirituality did. I have taken what I need from the Bible. I molded it to fit my belief system. The spirituality did take hold. I was sensitive to beings on another plane of existence. My first experience with a ghost is worth sharing. It was a very pleasant experience for me, but I still scratch my head, pondering the reason for his visitation.
My father had moved to another state and my mother found herself compensating for his absence. She knew how much Dad and I bonded when we fished. I took my father's leaving very hard. At times I would be so upset at school that Mom would have to leave work and pick me up. I think she decided that a nice fishing expedition would somehow help me heal. She was granted permission to fish a farm pond by a member of our church.
She packed up the fishing gear and the three sisters and took us fishing. My fourth sister was born after my parents reconciled, and the youngest was a toddler at this time. We parked and lugged all the fishing gear and bait to the pond. Mom had an inherent fear of water. It became a family joke. Dad and I would set off to go fishing and Mom would yell after him, "Don't let him get near the water!" A feat in itself when fishing.
The pond was called Mahon's Pond. It became quite popular with our family over the years, but this was our first venture there. I chose a spot away from the other siblings who seemed more interested in playing. Dad and I both knew fishing was serious
