LinkedIn is a highly effective tool, but like any tool it can be abused, overused or under utilized. For example, do not create a profile and contact your friends to do so, then when everyone is set up try selling Amway/Quixtar to them. Do not ask your friend to set up and interview that requires 10 years experience if you only have one. Like every good thing, moderation and real aspirations are key.
You should not create a linkedin profile expecting to get a job. It should be created as a tool to establish connections, post a current and up to date resume, and to stay in touch with those business minded friends who might one day need you or know someone that needs you.
I never knew that some of my friends were so well connected and being a small business owner - this is very crucial. I have not used them once and will only ever use them if I am qualified and really need the resource.
Use the search feature, it needs some fixing but at the moment works well enough. Because if your friends and co-workers misspelled the company name or made it Co. versus Company it might not be found right away.
This is not Myspace so create a profile that is professional, no pictures with swimsuits - pranks - or jokes. It should be worded properly as well, one simple typo can ruin your chances of a job. I recommend a Shirt and Tie or business attire. Do not add video game champion as one of your skills, and under no circumstances are you to bash former employees or jobs because it could very well become your downfall.
NOTE: Some companies track job sites for postings and if an employee has posted a resume recently they flag it. Posting informaiton on LinkedIn is not a sign saying, "I'm Open for Business," but rather, "I am here, Connect!"
After several months of being a LinkedIn fan, I was able to arrange a phone call interview for information, not for a job, from a Vice President of a multi-million dollar outsourcing firm in the bay area. The gentleman was very courteous and we spoke for quite some time. The knowledge I acquired was worth more than a few thousand dollars and several college courese - all because I knew someone and they were able to arrange a phone call for me.
Recently, I have been contacted with job offers, however my current job is sufficient for me at the moment. As time goes by, old friends connect with me, business conversations are swapped and this free site has more than paid for itself. This is the most valuable networking tool I have ever used. It is easy to use, very effective, and set for a bright future. When they offer their IPO (Initial Public Offering - on the stock market), I will definitely allocate some funds for this stock.
You should keep your profile current by updating and reviewing your LinkedIn messages every 3-6 months depending on your current job situation.
