Of course there are. For the purposes of this article I define sexuality as the manner in which people express their sexual identity - though as a caveat these labels need to be treated with suspicion. For my purpose, sexuality is not about meditation, painting or exuding charisma - though I'm happy that they can be seen like that. My contribution is inspired by the following:
"Green's erroneous assumption is that there are two sorts of people in every society, heterosexuals who procreate and homosexuals-exhibiting what 'may be a minority trait genetic in origin' - who don't. the existence of a subgroup of people who define themselves as exclusively homosexual is a phenomenon of modern times, not older than the 19th century, when the word 'homosexual' was coined. There have always been men who lusted for men (and men who lusted, however shamefully, to be 'bottoms'), but the vast majority of these men, in most societies, certainly in Greece and possibly in our own, have been married and fathered children."
This is a passage from a letter by Mark Engel in the London Review of Books (3 July 2008) in reply to a review by Peter Green on the book 'The Greeks and Greek Love' by James Davidson. On reading Engel's letter, I thought "amen to that" because I am pretty confused myself and the best thing is not to worry about sexuality definitions. As suggested in the film "Total Recall" - a man is not defined by what he "is" (or claims to be) but what he does.
There are predominantly two sexes - but modern culture is now so rich that we probably have at least eight permutations if not more and even more brands of sexuality: There are straight men, gay men, cross dressers/ pre op transsexuals, sex changed men/post op transsexuals and the equivalent ranks for women. As for sexualities - they range from normal to the bizzare. Whereas in the past we may have turned away or been repulsed by "freakshows" - or advised to do so by our mentors, today it's all standard and increasingly non eye brow raising. Our attitudes on sexual moralities have shifted - anything goes as long as it does not hurt others such as in the case of child abuse or rape. Modern day medicines can now even suspend the onset of puberty to give teenagers choices about their sexuality. The future will certainly be very colorful though there will probably still continue to be ordinary men, women and families.
I am hesitant about defining myself sexually as there are times when I seem
