by Ruth Belena

Walking is ones of the best ways to maintain good physical and mental health. Even those who are not very fit to start with will soon notice a general improvement in health if they make walking part of their daily routine. Anyone who wants to be fit and healthy should also try to stick to a well balanced diet, refrain from smoking and cut down on drinking.

HOW TO GET MAXIMUM BENEFIT FROM WALKING:

Don't try to walk too fast but do try not to dawdle. Slow walking with hands in pockets and head down will have little benefit. Keep up a good regular pace. Look ahead and around, not at the ground.

Do drink plenty of water and take some water out with you when you walk, especially during warm weather or in a hot climate. It is important not to let your body get dehydrated.

Don't carry too much and do carry what you need in a rucksack or backpack. Don't use a shoulder bag or a bag with handles.

Do enjoy yourself and your surroundings. Don't try to do too much and do take a rest when necessary. Push yourself by maintaining the same steady pace when you are walking up hills and over rough ground. Don't just walk where you are always on smooth level ground.
