The pitfalls of too much positive thinking

I am a huge believer in "positive thinking" and an anonymous quote sums up why it is so important to have this attitude to life - "Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results."

I look at all situations that have gone bad and try very hard to find a positive in order I can learn, grow and develop both personally and professionally. It is not easy, in fact it can be very hard. It can take time but in the end it is worth it.

However, there is one exception to this rule. It is not OK to have a positive line of thought if this merely clouds reality and you are deliberately refusing to face some problem, whether in your personal life or professional life, by looking for the good things. If you are a battered wife, it is no good trying to look for the "good" aspects of your relationship, the relationship is wrong no matter which way you look at it. The same can be said for work, if the sales figures are down and your butt is on the line, to argue the sales team have a good working relationship is not sufficient you need to get in there and shake it down to see why the figures are down!

Therefore, always think positive but don't wear the rose tinted glasses all day
