Gothic Style for the Novice Beauty
(Girls only. Sorry boys.)
So, the gothic sub-culture appeals to you, dose it? The darkness lures you and you enjoy a little mystery in life? Maybe a few of your friends are gothic princes or princesses and you want to fit in with them? Or maybe you just like the gothic style and would like to give it a try? Well, what ever reasons you have for reading this article are no business of mine. However, I will do my best to satisfy your curiosity about what it takes to look and feel like a real gothic princess.
You've probably read a bunch of articles on gothic sub-culture that explain its origin and progression. In fact, you could probably recite the whole history flawlessly. For your benefit (and the sake of you sanity), I will not be discussing where the gothic sub-culture originated. I will simply give a few style tips and list the basics of gothic style and show you how to use these things to create your own unique (but still visibly gothic) look.
First the basics!
Every goth, boy or girl, needs an arsenal of black tee shirts. These can be plain or bare some kind of logo. Just keep in mind that not all black tees fit in with gothic style. Some are just boring old, mainstream tees. When shopping for your black tees, look for skulls, skeletons, black cats, bats, and red, white, or purple horizontal stripes. I find that bleeding hearts and bloody lettering work nicely. I also like to look for Nightmare Before Christmas tees and just about anything with a Tim Burton character on it. Band tees are great, too.
You will also need a pair of black jeans. I actually have a few pairs; some neat and business-casual and others ripped and grunged down.
A few black skirts will be needed, at any and all lengths, and in all kinds of fabrics. Some fabrics to look for, for any clothing item, are leather (pleather if you're vegetarian), lace, velvet, fishnet, vinyl, and PVC (if you're into that).
Now there's the question of outer wear. Well, personally, I'm not complete without my knee length Elizabeth coat in the winter time. It's flared around the waist and looks great with "puffy" skirts. Extra long trench coats work, as do leather jackets.
Accessories, baby! Yeah!
So, as a gothic princess, how does one accessorize? Well, there are lots of ways! If you are wearing a skirt and want to take it up a level, fishnet tights are always a plus. Striped leggings are nice, too. I have them in many different colors and I even like to mix and match them for that
