Poetry: Coming home

by Brian Willett

The journey nears its end
Home lies just around the final bend
Familiar feelings flood your soul
Like a smile from an old friend

But the expected relief you can't seem to reach
A feeling too fleeting to teach
You wonder why native grounds elicit foreign feelings
Like words you can't seem to put into speech

The lack of comfort grates on your nerves
And surprising straights replace expected curves
A piece of your life seems to be missing
The air heavy with unfamiliar verves

This house is no longer a home
Love failed to follow where you did roam
So now orphaned you float
A flower that missed its chance to bloom
