My husband and bought a home together about 6 years ago, and to tell you the truth, we never really put too much thought into a security system for our home. When we first moved into the house, we had been engaged for almost a year. Since it was just the two of us, and since I owned a dog, we felt quite safe.
Things changed however after a few years of living in our home, at first we started to notice that the neighborhood was not quite as nice as we thought. We started to hear more and more about how there were gang related issues, and closer to home than anyone would like. Then we started to hear about how people in our neighborhood, were being robbed more and more often.
It was about that time that my husband was informed that his work schedual was being changed, this ment that I would be home alone, more often than not. It was not until a few days later however, that safty became a real issue.
I had been home alone one night watching the news, and I saw a very disturbing news report. It seemed that a family in our neighborhood had been robbed, they too owned a dog, and they felt that it would be protection enough, it turns out that they were wrong.
When the burglars broke into the home, they were confronted by the family's dog. When the poor animal tried to protect it's family, the robbers decided to take care of the problem. They killed the poor creature, leaving the family to watch in horror as their family home was ransacked.
Thankfully since the robbers identity was unknown to them, they left the family alone, however I am sure that the loss of their family pet and the house robbery, will haunt them for some time to come.
After hearing about this tragity we decided to do something to protect ourselves and began looking into security systems. I know that a lot of people may think that because a dog is a living creature, it has a better chance of protecting a family, however we need to take into consideration that since they are living animals, it is very possible to dispose of them.
If a burglar is determined enough, no pet will stop them, especially if they are carrying a weapon. An alarm system however, is a little more secure. If your alarm system is conected to a security department, they will alert the athorities if the detect a break in, a pet cannot do that.
Another reason that I feel an alarm is more usefull, is because in most cases if a theif sees and alarm sticker, or is unfortunate enough to set off an alarm, it is usually enough to frighten them away.
So in the case of security alarm versus a dog security, I would have to say that an electronic alarm is definatley the better choice and is something that I am looking into for my own home as well.
I sincerly hope that you have found my article interesting, and that it has made you put some serious thought into the protection of your home and our family.
