leaned down and placed her hands on his shoulders.
"Well now, that's great. I want to hear all about it," she said aiming him towards the kitchen. Henry and Grandma sat down at the kitchen table for snack.
Henry's first instinct was to make excuses, "I would have been first Grandma, but Mom made blueberry pancakes and I ate too many before school."
Grandma quickly interrupted, "Now Henry, don't blame what you ate. I'm sure you were ready right from the start. I'm sure you tried your best. Now tell me something that you were proud of today."
Henry thought about that for a while as he dug out the yummy, filling from the center of his slice of apple pie. Henry quickly washed down the bite with a big gulp of milk and smiled.
After clearing his throat, he announced, "I'm really happy that I finally ran faster than Jimmy. I also beat my last year's time by two and a half seconds."
"Well, now, good for you," Grandma praised. "That's something to be proud of."
Henry started to feel better, as he told Grandma even more good things that happened throughout the day, like getting his first "A+" on his dinosaur essay and not failing his Math test.
"I guess coming in first isn't that important, huh?" asked Henry. "As long as I tried my best and had fun!"
"Well, sweet Henry, now that's the spirit!" cheered Grandma. "I'm very proud of you, and remember Henry you're always first to me."
Henry blushed as Grandma hugged him. Just then, a "knock, knock, knock!" rattled the porch screen door.
Henry's dad held the door as his mom headed into the kitchen.
"Anybody home?" hollered Henry's Mom.
"Goodness, a visit from both my son and daughter-in-law! It's not my birthday is it?" teased Grandma.
Dad explained, "We have some news. We wanted to tell you both together."
"It must be big news. Well what is it?" questioned Grandma.
Henry swallowed the last bite of pie. "Tell us!"
Mom exclaimed, "We are going to have another baby! Henry, you are going to be a big brother!" Her eyes welled up with tears of joy. She added, "And it's a girl."
Henry jumped up from the table. He ran around the kitchen shouting, "I'm going to be a big brother!"
Then he stopped and looked right at Grandma. "Hey, Grandma, that means you're going to be a grandma!" He paused realizing what he said.
Everyone giggled. They hugged each other.
Grandma turned to Henry. "Hey, Henry, do you know what else you'll be?"
Henry scratched his temple and thought about it. After a few seconds, his smile covered his face.
Henry stood up on the kitchen chair and shouted, "That makes me F-I-R-S-T, first!" As Henry climbed down from the chair, he added, "and if my new little sister starts feeling bad about being second, I'll remind her that second place is not so bad!"
