Poetry: Struggle

by Gloria Gibson

Created on: June 26, 2008

When I look in the mirror, into the eyes of that child
I ask her, why are you crying? No answer, just sighs
I sense that she's crying, crying out for my help
Something's wrong, I can't hear her, her secrets still kept

Maybe, she, thinks as I do, of life taken away
And wonders why one so young on this earth couldn't stay
Yes, he was my friend, Did you love him too?
The sadness in her eyes tells me yes that was true

I can see that she loved him, though he was not hers to love
He belonged to her best friend, and when push came to shove
To her friend he was true, he was true to the end
And then death came and claimed him, from eternity sent

I turn and I look, and in the mirror I see
I finally understand, the eyes belong to me
At last as I look, I can deal with the pain
I can finally accept, things cannot be the same

Though my friend has forgiven, the betrayal she felt
Her words of comfort, they hurt me, as before her I knelt
She says she forgives me, forgives the loss of her love
She says she can feel him, looking down from above
