Reflections: Investigating the incidence of boredom

by Lilly Harlow

Created on: June 25, 2008

Twiddling your thumbs, yawning, checking your watch repeatedly, all these are horrible symptoms of boredom.

Usually, boredom occurs when the body and mind is least active. To be un-bored (a new word created by me) you must find a way to create activity for either or both mind and body. The problem with boredom though, is that it's not as easy as it sounds. Often, people aren't sure what to do to become un-bored, so they might watch television. But then they get sick of that and become bored again because their mind is not being active. And, other people might go to a party, but things might dull and they'll be left yawning.

Also, people might sleep, eat, or lounge around excessively to pass the time. That's not good though, because when you eat, sleep, or lounge, what happens after that? You are left even more bored than before and upset that you wasted a whole day on doing nothing. Nothing is not good, I'm gonna tell you that right now. You may think that nothing is good, but it's definitely not, because you are left with empty days, an empty mind, and an empty heart.

But maybe, instead of liking and wanting to do nothing you just for the life of you can't think of what to do. The answer is simple!

The quick fix:

Boredom is an awful syndrome and can be prevented through great effort. Next time you feel boredom creeping up on you, try going out for a night on the town instead of twiddling those thumbs. Don't have enough money? Go for a walk or a bike ride, it's free and helps you get in shape!

Can't do something active? Then read a book, it engages your mind and passes the time.

Don't like books or can't seem to pick one up? Start cleaning or getting things done around the house. Maybe fix that toaster.

Not a handyman and your house is already spic and span? Try doodling or hanging out with your kids or pets.

Don't have kids, pets, or a doodling ability, go to the zoo or a park. It's childish atmosphere will help you remind you of the good ol' days and inspire you to do even more fun things.

Not a park or zoo near you? Try writing more stuff for Helium!

Can't write more for Helium? Erm, well, why not go out for ice cream or a popsicle. Get those brain cells and that blood movin'!

And there's Dr. Lilly's home remedies for the Boredom Syndrome, try one today! And remember, the best things in life are not boring, so why should you let your life be?
