2008 WWE Draft

by Nicholas A. Levack

Created on: June 25, 2008   Last Updated: June 26, 2008

Every year since 2002 (except for one year), we have had the WWE Draft. 2007, however, marked the first ever tri-branded draft, which was ECWs first inclusion in the draft. On a side note, ECW's return in 2006 is probably the reason they didn't have a draft that year, since they were so preoccupied with all that was going on. All of which I found very entertaining, by the way.

The WWE Draft has always served to shake the landscape of the WWE. But this year, I am sure the fans were hoping for a bit more after the poor showing of last year's draft, especially in the case of Smackdown. During the primary draft, they received stars such as: The Great Khali, Torrie Wilson, Chris Masters, the "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, and one of their more notable draft picks from the supplemental draft, was Kenny Dykstra. Of those five superstars - who were possibly Smackdown's biggest picks of 2007, only The Great Khali remains wrestling in the WWE. Torrie Wilson to my knowledge retired, along with Ric Flair after Wrestlemania 24. Chris Masters and Kenny Dykstra were both fired, apparently after repeated offenses after they had already been suspended along with ten or so other superstars in fall of last year. Then, though Smackdown still has The Great Khali, most would agree he probably wasn't worth the draft in the first place.

ECW's only two draft picks of the primary draft last year were The Boogeyman, and "The Rabid Wolverine," Chris Benoit. I don't think I need to explain what happened to Benoit, but Boogeyman - though still signed to ECW, hasn't appeared on the show for a while. Even Raw who easily had the best draft picks did not get to enjoy some of them for long. King Booker and Bobby Lashley have both left the WWE since they were drafted to Raw. Though Mr. Kennedy and Snitsky have still helped to make Raw the biggest benefactors in the 2007 WWE Draft.

So this year, I, along with the majority of the WWE fans - I am sure - were hoping for much more ground-breaking results. We got what we asked for. The following will outline each pick of the primary draft for each brand, and describe how the superstar I predict will change its new home.

CM Punk to Raw: CM Punk is this year's Mr. Money in the Bank. Though he has made quite a name for himself on ECW, many would argue that he has not earned himself enough of a reputation to cash in on either the WWE or World Heavyweight championships. Those same people would also agree that the ECW Title, not being recognized as an official world
