Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably the best player at the moment. His future hangs in the balance. Real Madrid or Manchester United.
Now that Euro 2008 is over, the issue of Cristiano Ronaldo's future cannot be delayed any longer. Right after the Champions league final, Ronaldo declared he was not going anyway. Probably after his teammates won the Cup (he missed the penalty, remember?) However, right after that, he has spent the whole summer so far dropping hints that he might want to play for Real Madrid, his so called dream team without committing himself one way or another. He has said that he will return to Manchester to talk to his United bosses, who are standing firm and insisting that he will not be sold, no matter what.
One thing for sure, success of Ronaldo 42 goals in all club competitions is not down his genius or whatsoever. Look at Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez, they did all the running and opening the defence. Without them, there is not way Ronaldo could have the success he has today. By comparison, how much can he do to Portugal? Portugal do not have the players like Rooney, Tevez to supply those openings or chances. Can he turn Portugal around?
Look at Real Madrid, they have made past second round in the last 4 years. If all the teams were taking part in Champions League or European Cup, Real Madrid would only be 3 winners ahead of Manchester United. I could not figure out why they keep saying they are biggest club in the world.
Something is very interesting. Manchester United has 70,000 members on Facebook. Real Madrid has 30,000 members. What do you think?
We have seen enough. Manchester United is not about Ronaldo. Ronaldo is not that important. Eric Cantona has left. We got another generation of players coming through. Roy Keane has gone and we have Michael Carrick to replace him. We don't seem to miss Keano again. Ronaldo has replaced David Beckham. So no big deal Ronaldo wants to go. This club always manages to attract the best talents and players. As long as the club stays firm in developing the brand of attacking football, Manchester United will always the biggest club in the world.
Ferguson is obviously determined to keep his star man at all costs. The fiery Scot will never be bullied or railroaded into anything and it is his influence which gives United fans some hope that Ronaldo will be forced to stay put. However, Many United fans I talk to are of the opinion that the player should be sold as the club can live without him. Clearly this is a sensible stance to take but Ronaldo, at present, is pretty much irreplaceable at Old Trafford. Manchester United will always be bigger than any one individual. But the loss of their best player at a time of real strength will hit them hard.
