Can a single global currency work? The answer is a stunning "YES!" It has worked many times in the past recorded history and is at a stage to be implemented again, in our modern times.
Many things have to change to make this possible, but they are occurring and the changes are as inevitable as the rising sun!
First of all, the United States must get over their paranoia about globalization. The fact that many businesses do business around the world is not recognized as a good thing by a sizable chunk of the American public. Globalization is viewed as a drain on our economy and a threat to all in the workforce. Instead, it should be identified as opening up the world as a market place for US products. US workers need to change their definition of work place and include places beyond the shores of our country.
The politicians of many foreign countries will have to be thrown out, assisinated, or removed from power, or they will simply goble up any cash coming into the country. All of the world will have to agree to one single currency, issued by a single entity and backed up by the wealth of the world. A world dollar in Zanzibar is as good as a world dollar in Peking, London, Dallas, New York City and on the continent. No small time dictator of a backwater African nation can unbalance the system by excess consumption, or refuse to accept the world currency for its full value. Once these and a few other basics are recognized, the program becomes much more possible.
The Euro will have to move aside for the Global dollar and its constituents should be eager now that the full benefits of belonging to the Euro have surfaced. The powers that predicted a surge in value for the European area are now reaping their reward. The world will slowly realize that one single currency has immense value for commerce and social purposes.
The net effect of a global currency is that the nations having a currency less than the world standard - the USA Dollar - will move up in value. while those with currency more valuable than the US Dollar will lose a little until the values equal out. You can substitute Euro for US Dollar in the above example, or any other largely circulated currency.
The values of the global buck are nearly the same as the spread of English as the language preferred around the world. There are no large populations in the world where English is not learned in primary grades of school. English is spoken throughout the world as the standard for business transactions and particularly those involving large sums of money. It is simply understood by all leaders throughout the world that a single currency would give opportunities to the people in many nations to feed, dress and house themselves in a way they will not be able to garner any other way.
Other leaders in the world realize the globalization of currency will drive them out of power and they will fight the movement as best they can. These leaders often control their population by devaluing the national currency until it is worthless paper and the economy moves into bartering. In this way, they control who has what to barter!
Can global currencies work? Yes! Will we see this come about? Probably not for another 50-75 years and a lot of change in leadership.
