There are so many different characteristics a breed must possess to be the best guard dog. That is a tall order for even the most notable breeds. Having to choose the best guard dog breed is like having to choose the best actor of all time. Everybody has their own opinion. There are a few breeds people could debate and agree on. But remember the best thing in a dog especially a guard dog is training. Almost any large breed from the guardian group could make an excellent candidate for the best guard dog if they are trained properly.Like I always say a good protection or guard dog is a dog that can be near you at all times. If your at a parade or just a get together at your home.My point that I make is you never know when trouble is going to happen and if your dog is not trained and is only aggressive, and you have to put him away, when people come over. He will be useless! If trouble happens and he is in the basement because he or she hasn't been trained right.
In some states a burglar can sue you if your dog bites them!If you don't have a beware of dog sign, letting potential intruders know you have a dog on the premises. You could be in for an unsettling court date! In my opinion the best guard dog is the dog that doesn't even have to attack anyone. Some breeds have that certain look that will make a criminal go some where else, anywhere else but your home! Some breeds already invoke fear and some, nobody wants to be willing to "try" . I have had the opportunity to attend quite a few police canine sessions.Plus a friend of mine owns a personal protection and sporting dog business. I have also gotten the experience of suiting up in a decoy suit and taking a few bites. I always thought the pit bull was going to bite the hardest,I was wrong! The hardest biting dog I felt was a ten year old Belgian Malinois. It still hurts just thinking about it! I have gained a vast amount of experience in this subject. There are breeds that tend to fair better in personal protection and some that excel at sporting protection such as ASR(American street ring) real situation trials, and french ring, and or mondio ring. There are so many different protection dog sports in the world today. I will list the top five dogs that I think would be the best guard dogs with training. I will consider size, speed, strength and most import the ability to take punishment and still have the heart to keep protecting. If my wife was in a situation and my dog ran away because the "bad guy" hit him with a pipe or stabbed him I would be upset! So wouldn't my wife!
5.Fila Braziliero, a large extremely protective breed deriving from Brazil.Used for hunting jaguars and tracking down escaped convicts.
4.Caucasian Ovchaka, a large and extremely protective breed from the Caucasus mountains in Russia and Armenia. bred as a flock guardian.
3.American Pit bull terrier, Must be a good size to be a true man stopper! This breed can give punishment and take punishment!
2.American Bulldog, A large and powerful breed originally from the southern states of North America. This breed was used to protect old southern homesteads from people and animals. This breed is a true brute!
And the number 1 guard dog in my experienced opinion goes to the................
1. Belgian Malinois, a medium to large breed. This breed was originally from Belgium and was used as a flock guardian. The Mal for short is the most popular dog for police use and military. It is no mistake either, Extremely fast and strong with an abundance of can do attitude!Malinois are not for the normal household. This breed needs to be working! It is a working dog first and everything else a distant second!
