Poetry: Morning

by Jon Coe

  • Writing Level Star

Dreaming, waking up, half asleep
checking tongue, teeth, eyes sunken deep
Yawning, stretching, again closing eyes
realization, processing, eyes open, surprise

Light, bright, streaming through blind
another day, another crack at this, mind
Birds singing, traffic beeping, horns
human race, waking, morning mourns

Toes wiggling, slipping from the sheets
foot on floor, coordinating, then two feets
Standing rigid, feeling frigid, on the floor
eyes not focusing, pasty mouth, open door

Trip on toys, boys are boys, to the mirror
looking in, wrinkled chin, nothing could be queerer
Open mouth, brushing night from these teeth
running water, shower, reinstating my belief

Coffee brewing, dogs chewing, reading news
toast and jellied spam, cereal, I automatically muse
Clock ticking, cats licking, it's off to work, I woe
hurried life, trouble, strife, where does the morning go?
