The advantages of the Internet

Advantages abound on the Internet for anyone seeking products, low priced items, auctions, information, and education. Sites selling products of all kinds are available by just typing into a search engine the item sought and clicking search. Numerous sites sprang up to help people find low prices on the items they sought, specializing the searches by price and brands. Online auctions provide some of the excitement of finding a desired item and then bidding on it to win the purchase. Information is everywhere, including checking the local library card catalog or a distant database. Then there is education.

Colleges all over the world, but especially in the U.S. have turned to the Internet to offer classes in almost any field. By expanding the reach of their particular class offerings, colleges are offering distance learning to everyone with a computer and access to the Internet. The problems students run up against are much the same as on campus classes, such as deadlines, writing quality, content of assignments handed in, and studying the materials for the class.

Online learning is less cost prohibitive than on-campus classes at many colleges and the classes have 'chat room' type discussion times that are very helpful. However, maintaining the discipline to keep up with studies, assignment deadlines, quality writing, and 'attending' the online class periods can prove difficult for students. One must keep up with the class at all times, and some people just can't maintain the schedules without the need to be in the classroom each week.

There is a website that offers free education classes. A student can take classes from the site's extensive catalog, at their own pace, and gain much knowledge. However, the student receives no college credits or degrees from the site. Taking the classes does, however, offer the student the opportunity to find a college nearby that offers classes that parallel the site classes, and the ability to seek college credits through the CLEP program.

Scams abound on the Internet as well, unfortunately. Job offers that are claimed to be really good, if you only pay their fees first. Investment opportunities that look good until you research them and find that the company doesn't exist or the Better Business Bureau has complaints against them as rip-offs. Anyone seeking work from home, investments, or millions collected as a stand-in heir to a fortune, and doesn't research the ideas thoroughly before putting money into the scheme discovers what P.T. Barnum once said. 'There's a sucker born every minute.'

Everyone using the Internet can find tons of good and bad information every day, waiting to be read and researched. Care must be taken against those unscrupulous people that would hack their way into your computer and steal your identity, your business records, your banking information, or any other private documents.

So while the Internet has many great advantages and thousands of places to find information and treasures, it also has some pitfalls. Just like the highways we travel on our way about our business, there are bumps in the road and pot holes as well. Drive safely on the Internet highway, enjoy the opportunities and try not to get taken for a ride, OK?
